Advocating For Public Awareness on Behalf of Youth

What is Take a Child to Work Day and Beyond?

Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day was launched in 1993 as Take Your Daughter to Work Day. During the 1990s, the event became the country’s best-known work and career readiness event, with tens of millions of Americans participating, resulting in national news coverage and even the participation of the White House.

In 2022, the Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day Foundation approached Junior Achievement about taking over the initiative, which had faced challenges in recent years, especially during the pandemic. In 2024, JA completed the acquisition of the event, rebranding it as Take a Child to Work Day and Beyond, which is more in line with how people commonly refer to it, but also highlights that any child should be able to participate and not for just one day.

Take a Child to Work Day and Beyond is a point of entry and introductory opportunity for JA Areas to engage with new companies and introduce their employees to working with young people through JA. It functions primarily as an awareness opportunity to introduce participants to Junior Achievement and JA’s other learning opportunities, like JA Finance Park, JA Job Shadow, and more. In addition, the event fosters at-home connections by encouraging young people to discuss career aspirations with their families, thereby starting a dialogue about future steps in the world of work.

Take a Child to Work Day and Beyond by Junior Achievement exists to bridge the gap between education and the workplace, providing young people with invaluable, hands-on experiences that help them envision their futures in meaningful ways. It’s about empowering a generation to take bold steps toward their dreams and fostering the confidence and resilience they need to succeed.

Investing in the Future of Our Children

The Take A Child To Work Day programs help youth maintain a positive and healthy self-image, helps them raise their future aspiration and helps them overcome societal barriers in order to reach their full potential. Through our program, we are able to connect children to employers for a real world work experience–outreach also includes historically disenfranchised students such as foster children, youth at high-risk of dropping out of school or youth who may not have a parent or guardian whose job will allow them to bring children to work. Our program is inclusive. It has always been intended as a springboard for creating a dialogue in communities and workplaces that will redefine the value system which govern life in the workplace.
